The West/North West Region provides a number of innovative services in response to the support needs of people with acquired brain injury and their families.

In Donegal, we provide an Assisted Living Residential service to people with ABI who have significant physical as well as cognitive and behavioural support needs

In addition, we provide a holistic, responsive rehabilitation service to people with ABI in their own homes. This Home & Community based rehabilitation service seeks to maximise the person’s potential to live independently by working with them to identify goals and support needs. A very important aspect of this service is working in partnership with families, friends, the HSE and other agencies to maximise the impact of the service in improving the quality of life of the person with ABI.

In Sligo, we have developed a Community Brain Injury Rehabilitation Service in partnership with the Physical & Sensory Disabilities Dept. of the HSE. Both organisations work to ensure as seamless a service as possible for people with ABI in the Sligo, Leitrim and West Cavan area. The service is led by an ABI Team, consisting of professional staff from ABII and from the HSE. Individual rehabilitation programmes are provided to people with ABI, and can consist of group work, individual work, and therapy input. The service also includes a Transitional Living Unit, where persons with ABI can avail of more intensive rehabilitation on a five day basis.

In the Galway/Mayo area, we provide an Information and Resource service. This service was established in response to significant levels of contact seeking support, advice and assistance from people with ABI and their families.

A professional staff member with significant experience in the area of ABI meets with people with ABI and their families to provide them with information on the impact of brain injury and reassurance in relation to what they are experiencing. Much of the support involves providing an understanding and listening ear. The Information and Resource Worker assists people to identify possible pathways to accessing support from a spectrum of services.

Support and input is tailored to the requirements of families at any given time, and in many instances, support and advice continues to be offered on an on-going basis. p>
