Acquired Brain Injury Ireland are saddened to hear of the death of Joao Carvalho who suffered a bleed on then brain as a result of last weekend’s MMA fight.
Due to the nature of this sport ABI Ireland are not in a position to take a supporting stance on MMA fighting. Seeing the consequences of this fight it has raised many red flags for MMA as a sport.
Carvalho was punched 9 times on the side of his bare head in the last minute of the fight. Brain injury and symptoms of a bleed on the brain can be delayed in onset, making brain injury, concussion and repeat concussion a difficult diagnosis to make. As a result, any sport where you can cause deliberate injury to the brain/head should be questioned, regulated and in consideration of a rule change.
This fight was won on a technical knockout when Carvalho was no longer able to defend himself. Consequently, this young man suffered a bleed on the brain, sustained a severe brain injury and had his life dramatically cut short in pursuit of a sport.
ABI Ireland express their deepest sympathies to the Carvalho family.
