Approximately 150,000 people in Ireland are living with a brain injury today.

We are asking you to take on a challenge and walk 150,000 steps between January 1st and 31st.

You can begin the new year in a great way that will not only be good for your own physical and mental health but will benefit brain injury survivors as you raise funds for Acquired Brain Injury Ireland.

How it works?

  • We’d encourage each person taking part to set a fundraising target of at least €150 for Acquired Brain Injury Ireland
  • Register and create your fundraising page.
  • Your target is to reach 150,000 steps and you’ll be responsible for keeping count of your own steps.
  • Record your steps on your smartphone or watch or by downloading a free step recording pedometer app.
  • You can also sign in or sign up as user of Strava to record your steps.
  • If you don’t have a smartwatch and want to use an app on your phone to record your steps you should install a pedometer app for Android or Apple. Examples of recommended apps are:

  • Then take to social media to share your steps and fundraising efforts as well as your photos and videos.

What is Step Up for Brain Injury?

A challenge to walk 150,000 during the month of January and create a fundraising page to raise funds for Acquired Brian Injury Ireland. Do this your way by maybe walking every day or doing one big walk once a week. Just remember to use your smartphone or smartwatch to record each step. Record your steps at home, at work and outdoors.

Are there any registration or participation fees?

No – Step for Brain is free to take part. We just ask that you fundraise with a page on JustGiving by registering here.

Is there a fundraising target?

We’re asking all participants to set a minimum fundraising target of at least €150. This represents the estimated 150,000 brain injury survivors living in Ireland today. €150 could something as simple as getting 15 friends and family to each donate €10 to you. Collect donations by setting up a page here.

How do I get my Step up for Brain Injury commemorative medal?

Everyone who raises €150 or more on their fundraising page will receive a special medal to say thank you.

You don’t need to do anything to claim your medal, we’ll pop it in the post after your challenge.

We aim to have these in the post to everyone in early February.

How do I fundraise?

Please set up a page to fundraise by clicking here. All income is transferred directly to us. If you’d like to raise money in any other way or would like a sponsorship card to collect cash offline, then we can arrange this too. How will Acquired Brain Injury Ireland use the funds I have raised?

The money you raise will make a big difference to the lives of the 150,000 people in Ireland with a acquired brain injury today. These funds are essential to our variety of services for people living with a brain injury as well as their families and their carers.

Can I take cash donations?

If you receive cash donations you can add these as offline donations into your fundraising page to keep count of your overall total. For Acquired Brian Injury Ireland to receive these donations you can call us to donate by phone on (01) 280 4164. You can also donate on our website here:

Can I meet other people taking part?

After you register you can join the conversation online.

We are encouraging everyone to meet virtually.

Once you’ve registered please join our Facebook group here to chat and share updates on your steps count and your fundraising total.

How do I track my steps, and can I link my fitness app?

If you have a smartwatch you will be able to record your steps on this and use the connected app on your phone to keep count.

If you don’t have a smartwatch you can download one of the many apps on your Android or Apple smartphone to record your steps. Just find one that works for you and start recording your steps with your phone in your pocket.

If you don’t have a smartwatch and want to use your phone to record your steps you should install a pedometer app for Android or Apple.
