Barbara O’Connell, Acquired Brain Injury Ireland CEO grew up with brain injury.

She was a teenager when her brother Peter had his first brain injury leaving him without any memory of the life he had lived before the accident.

Tragedy followed him throughout his adult life. A subsequent car accident, meningitis and stroke all became part of Peter’s story.

There were lengthy hospital stays, moving from ward to ward and bed to bed. And like so many before him, Peter ended up in a nursing home. At only 40 years old.

There needed to be a better solution for people like Peter. And together with her husband, Maurice and the rest of their family, Acquired Brain Injury Ireland was created.Peter’s home in Dublin was converted into an assisted living residence. It became our flagship service supporting people living with a brain injury and has grown to provide many different services all over Ireland.

There is so much more work to do though.

In our 21st year, there is still a huge number of people facing the situation that Peter left behind.
