Anvers Housing
Anvers Housing is the leading housing agency in Ireland providing accessible homes to people impacted by an acquired brain injury. The organisation is expert in creating and operating houses that support brain injury survivors to live barrier free, maximising their independence within their own communities, where they feel at home.
Anvers Housing was founded in 2004 by Barbara and Maurice O’Connell, in response to a persistent and previously unmet need to secure dedicated housing for people living with an acquired brain injury, within their own communities.
Working in partnership with Acquired Brain Injury Ireland, Anvers Housing now provides community-based housing with support for people living with an acquired brain injury in five counties in Ireland, and the organisation continues to grow.
Housing with support
Rehabilitation services are provided to the residents of Anvers Housing by Acquired Brain Injury Ireland.
Those living in Anvers Housing are people who had normal, everyday lives until they experienced a life-changing trauma. Following their discharge from hospital, many survivors find themselves unable to go home. For some this is because the home they were living in no longer meets their physical needs. For others, it is because they require specialist hands-on support to help them plan and organise their day, manage their emotional or behavioural needs.
By working together, Anvers Housing and Acquired Brain Injury Ireland support survivors of brain injury to live more independently within a home-from-home environment, avoiding the need for prolonged hospital stays or inappropriate placement in nursing homes.
Although Anvers’ houses are adapted and purpose-built places, so much of what they offer is what anyone would ask of the place they call home. Anvers homes are inclusive and friendly, alive, accessible and affordable. They are attractive and have the ability to meet their tenants needs, as well as being sustainable and green.
