Making the invisible, visible: a creative arts and advocacy project for survivors of brain injury

A new, year-long project has commenced for members and staff at our Wexford Clubhouse.

‘Making the Invisible, Visible’ will support survivors of brain injury to tell their story and share their lived experiences using creative arts media. Since April 2025, participants have already begun to engage in regular creative arts cafes with a number of arts facilitators living and working locally in Wexford.

Over the coming months, they will continue to gain exposure to a variety of creative arts including clay, mosaics, music, and photography.

The project has been made possible through funding awarded to Director of Policy and Research, Gráinne McGettrick, from her fellowship at the Global Brain Health Institute, Trinity College Dublin and from the Alzheimer’s Association in the USA.

A curated exhibition of the creative outputs of the project is planned for April 2026. It is hoped that the exhibition itself and the works created by participants will raise awareness of acquired brain injury, its impacts, and the support and services required for survivors to live a full and meaningful life in their community.

To coincide with the beginning of the project, members of the Clubhouse in Wexford and residents in our Wexford Assisted Living service journeyed to the Irish Museum of Modern Art (IMMA), Dublin, to experience a slow-art workshop.

This was a wonderful opportunity for attendees to delve deep into a selection of artworks at the museum, led in conversation by members of the IMMA team.

Afterwards, participants had an opportunity to develop their own creative artwork inspired by their experience and their visit.

We look forward to sharing updates about Making the Invisible, Visible throughout the year!
