To coincide with National Carers Week 2025, we are proud to announce the launch of a new digital book, ‘Piecing it Together: acquired brain injury, a family perspective’ – a heartfelt, practical and inspiring guide created by family members caring for loved ones living with an acquired brain injury (ABI).
New book offers lifeline for families affected by acquired brain injury
We are delighted to mark National Carers Week (9–15 June) with the launch of a new digital resource authored by family carers

This free, online publication brings together the lived experiences of carers across Ireland who have generously shared their insights in the hope of supporting others who are earlier on in their journey. The book includes personal stories and practical advice, along with signposting to useful resources and support services.
The book is now available to read or download at the link below
Speaking at the launch, Dr Karen Foley, our Chief Executive, said:
“An acquired brain injury doesn’t just change the life of the individual – it has a profound and lasting impact on the entire family. From the outset, it has always been a priority for us to support families as they navigate this life-changing path.
This new book, created by and for family carers, is rich in wisdom and compassion. It’s an immensely valuable resource that will help others feel more prepared and less alone. I want to sincerely thank the families for their brave and generous contributions. Acquired Brain Injury Ireland is proud to have supported this important project.”

At the heart of ‘Piecing it Together’ is a strong message: families are not alone. The book reflects the strength and solidarity of people who have faced immense challenges and now offer a guiding hand to others following in their footsteps.
Brenda Carney, whose father sustained a traumatic brain injury just two years ago and who contributed to the development of the book, shared:
“The impact of a brain injury is devastating for the whole family.”
Too often, we’re left feeling lost and alone, unsure where to turn or how best to help our loved one. It can be completely overwhelming. ‘Piecing it Together’ is the kind of resource I wish we’d had in the early days. It provides that starting point, that reassurance that you’re not alone, and offers clear guidance to other families who find themselves on this path.”
— Brenda Carney, family member
‘Piecing it Together’ is part of our wider commitment to family carers through our On With Life Programme – an initiative available free of charge and nationwide, offering support, training and resources to families adjusting to life after an ABI. The programme aims to reduce isolation and anxiety, while empowering carers with the knowledge and confidence they need.
Dolores Gallagher, On With Life Programme Co-ordinator, said:
“‘Piecing it Together’ was born from conversations as far back as 2019, when family members told us they wished there had been a guidebook to help them navigate the complexities of life after brain injury. These amazing individuals turned that wish into a reality.
They’ve shared their hard-earned wisdom, their art, their poetry, and their personal stories to help others. To the families who worked tirelessly to make this book a reality: thank you. Your dedication has created something truly powerful and lasting.”
