Empowering recovery through technology

We’re delighted to share the news that Acquired Brain Injury Ireland’s national creATe programme has been awarded funding through the Disability and Participation Awareness Fund 3.0. This vital support will help more brain injury survivors across Ireland regain independence and confidence through assistive technology.

After a brain injury, everyday tasks like sending a message, managing appointments, or accessing online services can become significant challenges. Many survivors face isolation, communication barriers, and a sudden loss of independence.

creATe helps bridge this gap.

Our national assistive technology (AT) programme empowers survivors to reconnect with their lives and communities using simple, accessible tools. These include:

• Voice-activated assistants (like Alexa or Google Nest)
• Smart home devices (such as video doorbells or smart plugs)
• Screen readers and user-friendly apps
• Communication devices for those with speech difficulties

Each participant in the creATe programme receives a tailored plan that integrates these technologies into their rehabilitation journey, helping them to live more independently and take control of their daily lives.

“Digital assistive technologies have so much to offer individuals who have experienced a brain injury”, explained Alanna O’Connor, Senior Speech and Language Therapist and creATe Programme Lead.

“We work with the person to identify the tech that will help them achieve their goals and whatever is meaningful for them, whether that’s independence, leisure, relaxation, communication, or even something as simple as sending a text without having to ask for help.”

The creATe programme is led by a team of expert clinicians who work closely with Rehabilitation Assistants, families and carers to ensure that the technology fits naturally into each person’s life.

Thanks to this new round of funding, Acquired Brain Injury Ireland can now look to extend the reach of the programme and continue to make a meaningful difference in the lives of those we support.
