ABI Ireland hosts Joint Oireachtas Committee on Disability Matters

We were delighted to host the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Disability Matters at our Side by Side clubhouse, Dún Laoghaire on 26 February.

This parliamentary committee considers issues affecting persons with disabilities including monitoring the implementation (by Ireland) of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. Committee members, Maurice Quinlivan TD (Committee Chair, Sinn Féin), Ruairí Ó Murchú TD (Sinn Féin), and former ABI Ireland colleague, Liam Quaide TD (Social Democrats), met with our clubhouse members and team to learn more about the impact of a brain injury and the vitality of rehabilitation.

This visit was a great opportunity for our team and CEO, Dr Karen Foley to highlight significant issues affecting those living with a brain injury in Ireland, as well as emphasising the importance of investing in brain injury case managers.

During the visit, there was an insightful discussion between our local services manager for North Dublin, Jan O’Leary and person-served, Susan Sutton. Susan spoke powerfully about how case management supported her after her brain injury, raising awareness of the need for case managers across Ireland. We would like to thank Susan for sharing her story.

The day was full of thought-provoking conversations between our team members, clubhouse members and the Committee members.

We are delighted to share some photos taken on the day.
