Make every stroke count: swim for survivors this November

We are excited to launch a new nationwide swimming challenge to raise funds and awareness for people living with life-altering brain injuries after stroke.

Acquired Brain Injury Ireland is inviting swimmers across the country to dive into a meaningful challenge this November. Stroke for Stroke encourages people of all ages and abilities to swim 5,000 strokes throughout the month of November – at their own pace and in any pool or open water. The challenge aims to raise vital funds for individuals in Ireland rebuilding their lives after a stroke.

In January 2022, Lynda’s life was upended by a sudden stroke. She describes the vital importance of having access to ABI Ireland’s services and the difference it’s made along her rehabilitation and recovery journey:

“”

I felt relieved the day ABI Ireland came in. The first thing they said was, "we’re here to support you." I felt like the cavalry had arrived!

— Lynda, advocate and stroke survivor

“The peer support I get every Friday has been life changing”, Lynda continued. “In our group, we motivate each other to try new things, push boundaries, do brain exercises, and share advice. That support rebuilds confidence, which is often shaken after a stroke.”

Approximately 19,000 people in Ireland acquire a brain injury every year, and stroke is the leading cause among those accessing our services. The rehabilitation we provide is essential to help survivors and their family members to rebuild their lives.

Through fundraising events like Stroke for Stroke, we can support even more people impacted by stroke and brain injuries across Ireland.

Director of Fundraising, Nicola MacManus is urging everyone to get involved:

“”

Every year, more than 7,500 people in Ireland survive a stroke. Around 5,000 of them are left with an acquired brain injury that can change everything about daily life.

— Nicola MacManus, Director of Fundraising

“By swimming 5,000 strokes this November, you will help us to provide essential rehabilitation, housing, and community support that empowers stroke survivors to live meaningful lives.”

Everyone who registers for Stroke for Stroke will receive a free Acquired Brain Injury Ireland swimming cap, helping participants to stay safe and visible in the water.

Whether swimming solo, forming a team, or joining through a local swim club or leisure centre, all are welcome to take part. To help you get started, a free downloadable fundraising pack is available from the Events section of our site. The pack includes posters, swim trackers, social media graphics, and stroke awareness materials.

Swimmers can choose any stroke and complete the challenge at their own pace. Any stroke counts – you can swim the front crawl, breaststroke, backstroke, or butterfly. Entry is free, and participants who raise €250 or more will receive a commemorative medal.

We are also asking swim clubs, hotels, and leisure centres to get behind the campaign by:

  • Promoting the challenge to members and guests
  • Hosting club swim days or relay events
  • Offering a dedicated lane or time slot for participants
  • Displaying campaign posters and sharing on social media

Why it matters:

“All funds raised will go directly towards Acquired Brain Injury Ireland’s vital rehabilitation and community services nationwide,” added Principal Clinical Psychologist, Dr Brian McClean.

“”

Swimming not only benefits physical and mental wellbeing – it is a wonderful way for people to connect, stay active, and support brain health.

— Dr Brian McClean, Principal Clinical Psychologist
