The Caring Workplace Initiative
We have partnered with Care Alliance Ireland on this project to support employers in creating inclusive, carer-friendly workplaces that recognise, attract and retain valuable talent.
Supporting employers
Did you know that 1 in 9 employees in Ireland is also a family carer? That number is expected to increase to 1 in 5 by 2030.
Family carers perform a critical role in providing support to loved ones like children or adults with additional needs, physical or intellectual disabilities, frail older people or those with palliative care needs.
Drawing on our experience working with hundreds of family carers re-entering or currently in employment, we’ve gained valuable insights into what helps carers succeed and stay engaged at work.
Our free, national programme offers employers:
● Practical guidance on carer-inclusive policies and supports.
● Awareness sessions for HR and management teams.
● Access to research, resources, and best practice insights.
Together, we can make workplaces more inclusive, resilient, and sustainable.
What is the Caring Workplace Initiative?
This new programme, led by Acquired Brain Injury Ireland and Care Alliance Ireland, was set up to support employers to attract and retain employees that are also family carers. Through working with family carers over many years, we are aware that they often feel isolated and overwhelmed in the workplace. This leads to decreased productivity and decreased job satisfaction, which in turn leads to high turnover. We want to help employers address this issue.
Our programme will guide employers with helpful resources to support family carers in the workplace and improve staff retention.
Be part of the change.
We’re calling on employers across Ireland to lead the way in building brighter futures for employees who care. Join the Caring Workplace Initiative and show your support for family carers.
By raising awareness and implementing practical supports, your organisation can help shape a more inclusive, compassionate, and resilient workforce — one that recognises the realities of modern life and values every individual’s contribution.
Why support family carers?
Family carers bring unique strengths to the workplace — commitment, resilience, empathy, and exceptional problem-solving skills. But without adequate support, many struggle to stay in employment, leading to talent loss, increased staff turnover, increased recruitment and training costs, reduced staff morale and engagement.
By understanding and supporting carers in the workplace, you can:
● Retain experienced staff and reduce recruitment costs.
● Boost morale and productivity by fostering empathy and flexibility.
● Enhance your organisation’s reputation as a socially responsible and inclusive employer.
● Comply with best-practice HR standards and emerging legislative expectations around carer inclusion.
● Attract new talent from the caring population who do wish to engage with employment.
